The Canon CR-2 followed three other 1-series Canon fundus cameras built on an all-new chassis and re-designed for Canon’s smallest desktop footprint yet. The entire instrument weighs just 34lbs and based on our subjective thoughts we think it looks quite futuristic and splendid. Unlike the CR-1 MK II which offers a decent sized LCD display, the CR-2 offers no such display and instead relies solely on an included Dell Laptop with preloaded Canon’s Retinal Control software for operation. The CR-2 also loses about 10 pounds and sheds a bit of bulk with the addition of just a new LED flash illumination and auto-exposure settings. Despite these couple additions, the CR-2 still maintains sole manual focus, alignment, and capture. We also can’t help but goff at the addition of a third party laptop which means the ergonomics of the CR-2 are overlooked by room for a required computer. The magnifications, image resolution, DSLR camera-back, image filters, and minimum pupil size also all stay the same to the CR-1 MK II as well. The CR-2 however is a worthy upgrade in terms of reliability and robustness; upgrades with design have allowed the power supply to greatly shrink and the internal optics require a quarter of the room they used to. All of this equates to a much ‘newer’ instrument than what we see in the 1-series devices, further resulting in better more robust internals that should outlast your career.

OUR TAKE: An ergonomic beauty with substance, that lacks automated fundus capturing flare (is that a thing?).

The CR-2 is designed to be even smaller, more lightweight and compact. This makes it easier to assist patients and provides significantly improved ease-of-operation. An integrated operation lever has been adopted for vertical movement of the main unit, switching between anterior eye and retina, and focus operations, which significantly improves alignment operability.

The CR-2 take retinal images through pupils of the normal diameters from 4.0 mm. When using the small pupil photography function, it can take through pupils of the diameters from 3.3 mm.

The white LED flash light saves on operating costs, power consumption and lessens maintenance frequency compared to xenon tubes.

The CR-2 can take images at ISO 1600 at the standard flash intensity, and ISO 6400 in low flash intensity mode. This reduces patient discomfort caused by light glare.

The observation light automatically optimizes the light brightness and flash intensity.

The CR-2 is equipped with a special digital camera using EOS digital technology. This enables the CR-2 to fully maximize Canon technology for shooting high-quality, high-resolution diagnostic images.

With the Retinal imaging control software, the photographed images can be browsed, processed, stored, output to the DICOM storage server, exported in DICOM or JPEG format and output to a printer.

The ergonomic control panel includes an Omni-directional joystick with a fine focus wheel and can be easily used by a trained examiner. The panel also illuminates if operating in a darkly lit room.

Close-ups can be viewed using “2x” mode which magnifies the retina. It automatically crops out the periphery of the image so that the region of interest is larger in the frame

The Canon CR-2 only offers a USB 1.0 port (besides connection with the DSLR) which should integrate directly with most EHR platforms. Always contact your EHR company to verify integrate abilities. Canon’s Imaging Control software should integrate directly as well.

The Canon CR-2’s RETINAphile Fundus Viewing Software runs on a Dell laptop running Windows 10.

Although the DSLR does allow viewing on a small LCD screen, full functionality of the CR-2 should be used in conjunction with Canon’s Imaging Control Software (standard).
