The Reichert 7 is (you guessed it), Reichert’s seventh attempt at a non-contact tonometer. We’re not really sure what the seven before this one was/were but we do know that the Reichert AT-550 of before was a great little NCT back in the day and this new model seems to operate quite the same; Buzz still sells (and quite likes) the AT-550. So naturally we were immediately curious to know what’s been fitted as new on the all-new 7th generation model and how it’s improved from the 550 era. Firstly and immediately noticeable, the Reichert 7 has been fitted with completely new hardware (besides some strange things like the same forehead rest pad), including an all new and original design– one we think is quite stunning. The display is also all-new featuring a larger touch-color-LCD screen with a much improved user interface platform. It’s also quicker, easier, and a touch more accurate. Yet we can’t help but notice that the 7’s applanation ‘puffer’ is much the same as last model year’s. Although the stepper motors and the LED sensors circuitry is all improved, the nozzle itself and the actual air-pump is exactly the same meaning the puff is just as intense and positioning is just as important. Since the Reichert 7 is entirely automatic, it relies exclusively on the positioning and compliance of the patient– several blinks or an incorrect forehead angle and the system will not acquire an IOP accurately or in some cases not at all. This stresses the importance of the operator properly aligning the patient and perhaps acquiring several (more than comfortable) ‘puffs’ to ensure accuracy. There is no ‘manual mode’ thus the Reichert 7 may not be ideal for the extreme elderly or extreme youth. With that being said, the Reichert 7 is completely automated! Notice our use of exclamation because, with the compliant patient, the instrument does all the work itself, without any requirement of axis alignment or “planning blinks.” All that’s required is the simple touch of the “Start” button and the unit goes to work swiftly auto-aligning and auto-capturing IOPs employing all-new LED sensors that are indeed much improved from the AT-550. The new UI displays it simply and the updated thermal line printer marks it quickly– plus, new EHR capability via USB.
OUR TAKE: All new design and hardware makes it quicker, easier, and more accurate. Complete automation means no more operator interference with most patients.
Reichert 7 features an all-new, one-touch, multiple- measurement mode that delivers 3 or 4 measurements with a single press. This new feature saves time, increases accuracy, and ensures the highest level of comfort for your patients.
The touch screen interface features an easy-to-use, icon- based operating system enabling even inexperienced users to make measurements in seconds. The full color display guides the operator through the measurement process showing everything from the alignment of the eye, to the display of the readings. Set up menus and instrument options are also easily accessible and simple to navigate.
Reichert 7 is designed to make the entire measurement process a comfortable and non-intimidating experience for patients. The instrument features the quietest operation and softest air puff of any NCT available.
A sliding headrest enables easy patient positioning to ensure fast and comfortable measurements. The operator simply slides the headrest to the left or right position and the patient positions their head against the comfortable headrest pad. Reichert 7 automatically detects which eye is being measured.
The Reichert 7 nosepiece contains an array of bright LEDs. These provide an obvious visual cue to the patient for fast fixation and alignment, thereby reducing exam time.
Operation of Reichert 7 is extremely quick. Patients simply lean against the forehead rest while the operator touches an icon on the screen to activate the fully automated alignment and IOP measurement process. The measurement is taken with speed and simplicity unlike any other NCT, without sacrificing accuracy.
The Reichert 7 does have an optional 65mm (range) chin rest that can be connected to the instrument.
It is not included with this purchase however can be ordered through the manufacturer directly:
Catalog number: 16049
The Reichert 7 does integrate directly with most EHR/EMR platforms via built-in USB port.
The Reichert 7 does not have a ‘manual override’ feature and relies exclusively on its automated sensors to properly align and acquire IOP measurements.
The Reichert 7 does not have a joystick and the instrument is entirely automated and motorized.
