The Woodlyn Classic has a more unique appearance that similar refractors– almost as if with three layers or wings if you will. They’ve done this to allow the “spherical knobs” to be independent from the auxiliary dials and therefore they land conveniently placed next to the continuous spherical wheel on either side. They have good reason for doing this, and we’ve always been annoyed that the traditional “Reichert” phoroptor is too mean to give large spherical jumps its own dial. Woodlyn’s idea is however not charge-free, as it makes the device look rather odd and not as appealing when compared with its competition. We are also less than enthused (in general) with the way the dials and knobs feel overall- slightly stiff and less pneumatic than we would like.

OUR TAKE: A more efficient Phoropter given the spherical dial, however it comes with a slightly cheaper feel.

#1. Spherical Knobs Where They Should Be

By far, the best feature of the Woodlyn Classic is the positioning of the “spherical jump” knob which changes 3.00 diopters in either direction. Unlike most phoropters which position the knob way up top with the auxiliary knob, the Woodlyn creates the most convenient way to change up/down of any phoropter available. It makes perfect sense why they’ve arranged them so close together (and downwards on the instrument for that matter); we wonder why more manufacturers don’t make that option available.

#2. Unique Design

The Woodlyn classic is the only instrument on the market that presents itself in a folded, multi-layer platform. This looks different, and intriguing regardless if its a lot of new material only for the sake of having well-placed spherical knobs. It is however pretty– almost a butterfly shape that still maintains a compact feel.

We find the knobs and dials have a “lesser” quality feel than Reichert and Topcon models, however the Woodlyn is comparable in every other category.

Woodlyn Phoropters from BuzzOptics are only available in minus (-) cylinder.
