When the first Zeiss VISUCOUT arrived at our offices with its sleek shape and modernistic lines, we were very excited. Portable instrumentation, especially the kind that looks (this) good peaks our interest– primarily because we can play with the thing straight from our hands; it is a powerful feeling to be able to capture a retinal photo without so much as pointing-and-shooting. And thus the Zeiss VISUCOUT 100 does not disappoint. Unlike the majority of other handheld fundus cameras, the VISUSCOUT is intuitive to use and doesn’t require the stars aligning to obtain an adequate image. Much technology has been packed into the VISUSCOUT to ensure that alignment can be achieved and maintained throughout the process- and this is what makes the VISUCOUT stand out from the rest. We also were impressed by the system’s modern user interface that is well thought-out; the trigger capture button also has a nice feel to it- and communication between the camera’s shutter and the software is instantaneous. Despite it’s rather large carrying case, the instrument itself is quite sleek and looks as futuristic as it feels to use.
